An interesting op-ed, written by Rev. Kevin R. Johnson, who took over Bright Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia (where the Rev. Congressman William Gray was pastor). The op-ed is the reason why Johnson, a Morehouse alum, was uninvited from being one of the commencement speakers this year at his alma-mater.

Above is the link to the video project of Villages Without Walls, a ministry of Bethel Pentecostal Church in Dorchester, MA. It is produced by the Greenwood Street youth they work with, and there are young men and women from across ‘hoods commenting on their lives on the streets. A cautionary note: the vid is raw, and the people they interview are talking real talk. I think its one of the best representations of the voices of street youth today…

I am here to present at this years National PICO gathering. Over 500 clergy from 23 states and 35 religious denominations have come together to call for an end to poverty, and an increase in economic and racial justice. It is also the kickoff campaign for the Lifelines to Healing Initiative, headed by Rev. Michael McBride of Berkeley, CA and a national PICO organizer. There are groups in cities across this nation that are interested in how to reach the disconnected and disinherited in our communities…

Paying homage @ St. Anna’s Church – the List

St. Anna’s in New Orleans is the episcopal church that lists the names, dates and causes of death of each homicide in the city. The names are posted on the outer front wall of the church (my friend and colleague Stewart is in front of it), and every quarter, St. Anna has a vigil service for, and on behalf of all the families. NO has 115 homicides as of this post…

While at this morning’s session of the Neighborworks Conference on non-profit capacity building, there was an interesting exchange between the group members around accepting money from organizations that didn’t necessarily jibe with the organization’s mission (like tobacco companies, casinos, etc.). There were those who advocated for maintaining mission integrity at all costs (and turning down $ even if it hurts), and others who looked for a more balanced approach, by adjusting priorities while maintaining your org’s mission.

But the most interesting comment came from a friend of mine, an inner-city pastor who kept saying “take the money no matter what”. After rattling everybody’s chain, he explained that his church takes in offerings from people of all kinds of lifestyles – questionable or not – and he (as the pastor) in turn uses that money to the glory of God. His point is don’t be afraid to be creative when you partner with other organizations who seem so different from your own. Integrity doesn’t get compromised by association alone.
