Fearless Harmony

15  Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.   16  Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.
Romans 12:15-16

Ever been around someone who is conceited?  Someone who has an overly exaggerated sense of themselves?  A person who brags about their actions and accomplishments and regularly drops names of people of note they know?   Ever sat on a church committee or worked along side someone like that?  Paul is not  speaking against healthy self-esteem here.  He is referring to the individual who would have a hard time with our verses this morning.  Living in harmony with each other requires a sense of humility and character that puts your neighbor’s concerns above your own.  When we pray for others, or help one another  or just be present (v. 15), we find spiritual fulfillment for our lives that strengthens our self-esteem.  In other words, you can love yourself, but not worship yourself (!)  Get it?…

O Lord, we thank You and rejoice in Your name.  We bless you as we rise today, and as we go about our daily tasks.  Teach us to be more humble and to be more aware of the needs of people around us.  Bless us to be more present, and to reach out to live more harmoniously with people we touch today, in Jesus name, AMEN

God bless,

Rev. Jeffrey Brown
