17 Be o=

 18 On my account=
you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to=
the Gentiles.

will be given what to say,

Speaking Truth to Power =

 =
I was proud to watch our President last night addressing Con=
gress.  To me, he embodied the title of today’s devotional.  In t=
he spiritual realm, Jesus charged his disciples not to be afraid or ashamed=
of speaking Truth to Power via the Gospel.  Paul admonished his reade=
rs to not “be ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ”.  But there are t=
hose of us who do not know the bible in an in-depth way – we just can’t quo=
te scriptures ‘on a dime’.  We pray, but are not comfortable praying o=
penly, and feel a little sheepish about what they would say.

This is why the text above is encouraging.  At cr=
ucial times, the Spirit will speak through us, and guide our thoughts.&nbsp=
; Even when speaking to the elite and powerful, our words through faith wil=
l have an impact.  I’ve often counseled people to “speak as the Spirit=
leads”, and they look at me incredulously(!)  But I’ve had my times w=
hen its been intimidating to speak, but as soon as I made the commitment, G=
od stepped in on time.  And God always steps in on time.  You may=
not have command of the scriptures like a biblical scholar, or speak with =
power like Dr. King, or have the eloquence of a orator, but you can speak f=
rom your heart (everyone has one of those!), and speak knowing that God is =
with you…

O God I ask t=
hat you touch each of your children with this prayer, and give us the words=
to speak in the spreading and defense of our faith.  I ask that you b=
less each of us today with an opportunity to bear witness to your grace and=
mercy in our lives, and that you will use our words to your glory.  I=
n Jesus name,   AMEN

God bless,
