“I am” declarations from Jesus, and these verses are among the more familia=
r. Jesus says as the Good Shepherd, he has a special bond with his pe=
ople that goes beyond the call of duty. The “hired hand” (v. 12) aban=
dons the sheep because his charge wasn’t much more than paid obligation – i=
n other words, he didn’t care about the day-to-day concerns with the sheep.=
Jesus cares, so much so that, like a shepherd, he will lay down his =
life for God’s sheep. His attention and care is based on love instead=
of obligation. When someone cares for you, they pay special attentio=
n even to your small needs, and fiercely protect you. That’s Jesus, t=
he Good Shepherd…
midst of overwhelming pain, you offer hope. Give help to me, whose sp=
irit seems to be lost and whose soul is in despair. Let me feel your =
love. Let me believe in a rebirth of joy so that I can experience now=
a small taste of the happiness I wish to know in eternity, AMEN.
