9 And the wor=
d of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

10=
He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, to=
rn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I =
am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

11=
The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mounta=
in in the presence of the Lord, for the L=
ord
is about to pass by.”

Then a great and po=
werful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks befo=
re theLord, but the Lord was not in the=
wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lordwas not in the earthquake. 12 Aft=
er the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was=
not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over =
his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said t=
o him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Fearlessly Listening to God

What first strikes me about this passage is th=
e persistence of God’s voice.  The Lord was trying to get Elijah to fa=
ce the real reason why he fled the land of Israel after receiving death thr=
eats.  Following God can lead to controversy and trouble – it is rarel=
y a smooth road.  But The Lord God stays with Elijah – speaking to him=
in various ways in order to get him to do the one thing needed at the time=
:  which is to listen not to the voice of self, but the voice of his p=
rotector, guide, and savior.  Sometimes, through self-pity, we get stu=
ck on our own voices within.  But there is also a still, small, gentle=
whisper within – God – who is also trying to speak to our spirit.  Tr=
y listening today…

Lord, I thank you for making your vo=
ice distinctive from the many voices within.  I pray that you train me=
to listen for Your voice in whatever circumstances I face in life.  S=
trengthen my prayer life, and bless the journey as I walk in Your ways,&nbs=
p;in Jesus name, AMEN

God bless,
