Fearless Carpe Diem

59  He said to another man, “Follow me.”  But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”  60  Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

Luke 9:59-60

How many people have said “yes” to a new spiritual path in life, and added the words “but first…”?  In your mind you say, “Its not that I won’t, its just that I have other things to get out of the way first”.  Jesus, while walking to his fate, implores another person to walk with him.  The man gives just that kind of excuse (v. 59).  Our Lord’s response is not to be cold, but to remind us that life is short, and time is not promised to us.  Someone once said “We spend our lives as if we had another one in the bank”.  Time wasted in preparations, in other priorities, and in routine can calcify opportunity and fade the chances to live abundantly.  Every moment marked by your heartbeat is a gift from God.  Use that gift fearlessly…

Jesus, I thank you for every moment that is this day.  Help me not to waste them, but help me to live purposefully and abundantly today, in Your name we pray, AMEN

God bless,
