Surpassing the Pharisees

19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:19-20

Jesus continues his radical change by challenging the crowd to “surpass” the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees.  At first it seemed like a tall order – the group of religious leaders were popular with the people because of their practical faith.  But Jesus eventually reveals that their form of religion was warped with legalism, favoritism and surface posturing.  That caused the Pharisaic system to be particularly cruel and violent to those who were disadvantaged, while letting those who were no better in their spirituality get away with anything.  Bottom line – faith is no good unless you walk your talk (v. 19).  Its your choice – so, how will you do it today?…

Lord help me to see where I need to walk my talk, and let my light so shine today, in Jesus name, AMEN
