Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there =
is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities=
that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling ag=
ainst what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment=
on themselves. 3 =
For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wron=
g. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what i=
s right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wr=
ong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are Go=
d’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to =
the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matt=
er of conscience.

nbsp; This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s ser=
vants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxe=
s; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then =
honor.

Romans 13 urges us to cont=
ribute as citizens in our country. It speaks of respect to the “power=
s” (KJV), and to participate in the activities that create the conditions f=
or living with each other in harmony and community (v. 6 & 7 for example). =
We commemorate those who served this country with distinction – which=
includes my Dad (may he rest in peace). Dispite living in a country =
that mis-treated them at the time, the service men and women of Jesse Brown=
‘s generation fought for this country’s freedom, because they believed that=
human dignity is God given, period. Their service paved the way for =
us to be who we are today. Take pause this morning, and thank God for=
their sacrifice…

Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet come to the place fo=
r which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a wa=
y that with tears has been watered.
We have come, treading our path th=
rough the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past, till now=
we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.
